There are a lot of fantastic games to play on PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, with many of them offering up engaging single-player storylines and experiences. Sometimes, though, it’s more fun to enjoy a game with friends, and it’s even better if that title can be played locally. Online games have made massive strides in recent years, but it’s hard to deny how entertaining it is to play through a riveting cooperative adventure with friends in the same room.
Thankfully, there are a lot of great local cooperative and split-screen projects for players to enjoy on PS Plus’ Extra and Premium tiers, with a slew of indie titles and triple-A releases to choose from. To help players get a better grasp on some of the best couch co-op games on PS Plus, here are some of the better offerings on Sony’s popular platform.
While all of these PS Plus co-op games are on Premium, some of them are not available with an Extra subscription. Each entry specifies whether the title can be played on both tiers.

The best local co-op games often threaten to ruin friendships, and Overcooked! 2 will test even the sturdiest of bonds. Sure, losing to a friend in a game of Mario Kart 8 can be frustrating and might lead to the occasional outburst, but that is nothing compared to the high pressure of running a restaurant.

Magicka 2 is a power fantasy in the sense that it gives players the ammunition to create spells that could impress the likes of Gandalf, Shang Tsung, and Doctor Strange. While players are given all the tools they might need, executing them is hardly easy as it requires carefully pressing the right buttons to combine magic types, and these input sequences are long. Testing as the game’s learning curve can be, Magicka 2 rewards the committed with satisfying wizardry destruction.
Although possible solo, Magicka 2 is really meant to be played with a few friends as enemies hit hard and without remorse. In a group of four, players can spread overwhelming and delightful mayhem across the land. It is a lot of fun.

That said, at its peak, the franchise offers non-stop thrills as players get to mow down horde after horde of enemies with satisfying weapons. Serious Sam Collection includes The First Encounter, The Second Encounter, and Serious Sam 3: BFE, skipping over Serious Sam 2.

Inspired by Minecraft while twisting more than enough elements to stand on its own feet, Portal Knights is a charming sandbox RPG that leans heavily into crafting. In local co-op, two players can team up for glorious split-screen action as they take on the campaign. Dropped in a randomly generated world after picking their classes, the adventures can look forward to exploration, combat, and building mechanics.
Portal Knights does not necessarily shine in one specific area, but the game’s strength lies in its variety. An issue with longer co-op games is that their gameplay loops might not be equally enjoyable to both players, an issue Portal Knights gets around by incorporating a myriad of ideas that cater to a range of preferences. If someone wants to focus on combat, they have plenty of bosses to keep them entertained; meanwhile, if another player prefers farming, they can also indulge in that activity.

Ben 10: Power Trip
Added to PS Plus in December 2022, Ben 10: Power Trip will likely only appeal to young fans of the cartoon since the game is a bit too repetitive and simplistic for older players. That said, this title is relatively ambitious for a children’s game. For one, Ben 10: Power Trip is set in a full-blown open-world that features four unique areas, most of which can be explored right out of the game. The surprisingly expansive map is packed with a fair amount of content as well, even if most of the side quests are very basic for the genre.
The co-op mode allows two players to step into the shoes of Ben Tennyson and Kevin Levin, although the heroes essentially have the same powers. In the story, Ben is stripped of his Omnitrix powers by Hex, and he gradually regains his aliens throughout the campaign. This structure means players regularly unlock new forms, which helps adds a bit of variety to the combat system.

Another September 2022 couch co-op PS Plus Extra addition, Spiritfarer casts players as Stella, a woman who assumes Charon’s role of ferrying the dead to the afterlife. A management sim with some minor platforming, Spiritfarer follows the genre’s typical formula of resource collection in order to expand the protagonist’s business. A beautiful art style and unusual premise help set the game apart from its peers.
Something else Spiritfarer does exceptionally well is local co-op. A second player can step into the paws of Stella’s cat, Daffodil. Along with being adorable, the feline can complete many of their master’s actions, lessening the busy work synonymous with these games.

A twin-stick shooter, Alienation was a blast when it came out in 2016 and time has done little to hurt the game’s appeal. Earth has fallen at the hands of an alien invasion, so it is up to the players to turn the tide by doing a lot of shooting and killing.

Alienation supports single-player and online co-op, both of which are quite fun, although the latter isn’t all that active nowadays. The Quarry
Added to PS Plus Extra in February 2023, The Quarry is Supermassive Games’ latest standalone release, not counting 2022’s The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me. Similar to Until Dawn, the game pays homage to classic horror, focusing specifically on movies rather than games. Inspired by slasher flicks of old, the story follows eight teenagers who decide to spend a night at the eponymous location. Unsurprisingly, this proves to be an unwise decision.
The Quarry is perfectly enjoyable when played solo, but the game goes up a notch when a group of friends comes together to complete it. If there are eight people, they can each take charge of a character, making decisions that might or might not be for the betterment of the overall group. Even though the plot is relatively streamlined, The Quarry does present players with a decent selection of choices that impact a character’s survival rate.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope and Man of Medan also offer something similar.

Borderlands 3
Borderlands and co-op have always gone hand-in-hand, and the third entry does not alter course. On PS4, Borderlands 3 allows two Vault Hunters to split the screen; on PS5, this limit is extended to four players. Gearbox’s long-awaited sequel does not deviate too far from the beaten path in terms of gunplay, loot, or visuals, although that does not mean it implemented no improvements. The game greatly refines the combat system, making gunplay weightier and less floaty than in previous entries. The cel-shaded graphics are gorgeous, and the campaign shakes up its environments quite frequently as well. The story is, for the most part, divisive.
Borderlands 3’s co-op is straightforward but great. Along with supporting split-screen, the entire campaign can be experienced in co-op. Players can also drop in and out whenever they feel like it, making everything quite accessible. As with previous installments, Borderlands 3 has four Vault Hunters (or classes), each of which comes with wildly different abilities and playstyles. In single-player, this variety extends the shooter’s replayability; in co-op, parties can mix and match styles to craft a formidable and balanced team.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is also on PS Plus Premium, and it supports 4-player local co-op.

An action-RPG roguelike, Children of Morta follows the Bergson family as they crawl their way through randomly-generated dungeons. Featuring seven playable characters that each feel unique, players have a wide range of duos they can try out, and they will need to experiment since swapping between family members is required.
Along with decent gameplay that blossoms nicely as the campaign progresses, Children of Morta also tells a surprisingly effective character-driven narrative, presenting the Bergsons as a unit with history rather than mere puppets. Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow Of New Despair
PS Plus has a couple of Earth Defense Force games, but The Shadow of New Despair gets the nod since it is the only one available on Premium and Extra. It is also the best of the selection available on the subscription service, and a solid entry point into this unapologetically cheesy franchise. Earth Defense Force pits humanity against giant insects in a homage to B-movie classics; the visuals are awful, the story is unimportant, and the gameplay can get repetitive quickly.

A masterpiece in the run and gun genre, Metal Slug 3 provides non-stop mayhem while still managing to feel totally in control. It is an action movie in video game form, and while its real home will forever be arcades, Metal Slug 3 is just as much of a blast at home.

Those looking for a fun and less stressful platforming game will find a lot to love with the charming release, LittleBigPlanet 3. The third mainline installment (8th installment overall) in the LittleBigPlanet series offered up some interesting new mechanics for local co-op players to enjoy. Three new characters were introduced alongside Sackboy, each with unique mechanics.
These gameplay elements helped to create a much better cooperative experience where players can “feel as if they’re important” to the progression in each level. With a lot of user-generated content to explore, LittleBigPlanet 3 is a great local-co-op adventure with a ton of replayability.

Developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Bethesda, Hunted: The Demon’s Forge is not one of the most celebrated projects of either company, although that does not mean it is bad by any stretch of the imagination. The 2011 game’s selling point is its co-op as the fantasy story revolves around two characters – E’lara and Caddoc – who go on a quest in search of an artifact. Not only are their personalities complimentary, but these fighters are designed to cover each other’s weaknesses during combat.
As Caddoc rushes forward to hack and slash his way through hordes of demons, E’lara uses her bow to take out enemies from a distance. Hunted: The Demon’s Forge works well enough as a solo adventure since players can jump back and forth between the two protagonists, but the combat system really comes alive in co-op.

SMG Studio’s Death Squared is an intriguing puzzle game that pushes cooperative play to the forefront. Split into levels (or tests), players have to direct their colored cubes toward their associated square. Each level comes packed with traps and challenges, and although the game can be played solo, Death Squared shines brighter in co-op.
Players need to coordinate to help each other reach their end goal, and communication is key. Puzzle games tend to be isolating, but Death Squared flips that completely on its head to create one of the genre’s more memorable modern releases. It is charming, difficult, and even tells a decent story for a puzzle game.

Packed with content courtesy of a fun Adventure mode and a plethora of exhibition options, Jak X combines fast-paced kart racing mayhem with vehicular combat, offering players plenty of explosive weapons they can unleash against their opponents.

When it came out in 2005, Jak X was the first Naughty Dog game to incorporate online multiplayer. Unfortunately, this feature concluded its run in 2012, but players can still set up a split-screen race if they want to face off against a friend. The process is a bit needlessly complicated since the game will fast-forward through the multiplayer options when someone enters that category in the menu, but as long as two controllers are plugged into the console, the split-screen option should be selectable.

Assigned as Jeff and Debra respectively, two people can split the office’s responsibilities to increase their chances of meeting the job’s expectations.

The charming indie title focuses on a dog who is suddenly burdened with the important task of bringing color to the world, a position recently vacated by the eponymous Chicory. Before long, the protagonist starts to feel the pressure as they try to please everyone, which is naturally a pointless endeavor.
Chicory’s co-op mode casts players in two separate but inherently connected roles: the protagonist and a paintbrush. As the playable character, the dog interacts directly with the world via exploration and dialogue. Conversely, the latter’s main job is to color the world, which can significantly change a setting. Warhammer Chaosbane: Slayer Edition
Warhammer games are as common as umbrellas on a rainy day, and the franchise is no stranger to co-op. PS Plus Extra highlights this fact beautifully by offering multiple cooperative Warhammer packages that cover a surprising range of genres. Vermintide 2 is a first-person hack and slash game that tasks players with clearing waves of enemies. Fatshark’s title is a great deal of fun. Inquisitor – Martyr is also an option for those who prefer isometric action.
As fun as these projects are, they only support online multiplayer. Thankfully for those looking for local co-op, Chaosbane is also on PS Plus Extra. With four classes, a reasonably lengthy main campaign, and post-game content, the 2019 release should keep players busy for a while.

Quite a few Housemarque projects are featured in this article, and that serves as a testament to the company’s brilliant record when it comes to local co-op games. Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition is a top-down shooter that blends high-octane action with survival horror elements in the form of limited ammo and urban environments. This marriage is not without its shortcomings, as the campaign can give way to bouts of frustration rather than enjoyable intensity. That said, the gameplay is solid and Dead Nation also has an addictive progression system.
The apocalypse does not need to be a lonely affair, and players can bring a partner to help them clear the streets of zombies. On the surface, this might not seem like that significant of a change, however, couch co-op works incredibly well in Dead Nation. In fact, it is the best way to experience this game.

Lost within the plethora of Ratchet & Clank games released during the early 2010s, All 4 One is designed with co-op in mind, although solo players can bring an AI partner along for the ride. For this intergalactic adventure, the eponymous heroes are accompanied by Qwark and Doctor Nerfarious, all of which are playable. Each character brings something unique to the plate, making this feel like a genuine team effort rather than a group of individuals.
Like other games in the series, All 4 One boasts an explosive combat system that features plenty of unorthodox weapons. The characters also have their own unlockables. While not reaching the heights of some other entries in the series, the story is decent and, at times, pretty funny.

PS Plus only has the last entry in Insomniac’s Resistance franchise, which is a shame as all three PS3 games are solid first-person shooters. While those not familiar with the previous games might feel a touch lost at first, Resistance 3 does a respectable job of introducing newcomers to humanity’s war against the Chimera. The game also has a new protagonist and largely does its own thing removed from its predecessors.

The campaign supports co-op, with a second player taking on the role of the protagonist’s friend. While the story does not reference the arrival of a second hero, Resistance 3 still incorporates its split-screen co-op well, making it simple for players to jump in and take part in the campaign.

Trackmania Turbo
Trackmania Turbo is a fun racing game known for its absurd tracks. Players can even create their own ludicrous masterpieces that defy the laws of physics. The 2016 entry in Ubisoft’s franchise includes a unique co-op mode called Double Driver that puts players behind the driving seat of a single car. Basically, both drivers control the vehicle and the game finds a middle ground between their inputs. Co-op is rather hard to pull off in racers, but Trackmania Turbo does it well.
The game also supports traditional 4-player split-screen, although this is naturally competitive and not cooperative. PS Plus Extra and Premium have a respectable selection of racing games, and while perhaps not among the very best, Trackmania Turbo scratches an itch that few others can reach.

Resident Evil 5 Standard Edition
Capcom’s Resident Evil is primarily known for its single-player campaigns, but the franchise has dipped its toes into co-op on occasion. For the most part, the series has a solid track record when it comes to two-player gameplay, and its co-op peak is undoubtedly Resident Evil 5. Marking a full shift into action territory, RE5 is a third-person shooter with a campaign that can be fully experienced with a partner, and the game is at its best when that is the case.
Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar have to make their way through a nation in West Africa infested with the Uroboros Virus. Teamwork is very important here, and players are expected to have each other’s backs. Ammo is relatively scarce too, so coordinating weapons to ensure both protagonists are armed and ready is crucial.
Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil Revelations 2, and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles also support couch co-op and are part of PS Plus Premium. They do not quite reach the same heights as RE5, but they are decent (particularly RE6).

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard
Diablo’s shadow looms far and wide over the isometric action-RPG genre. While Blizzard’s franchise might not be on PS Plus, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard serves as a respectable alternative. Except for its Norse influences, a setting that was more unique in 2017 prior to the launch of God of War, Vikings doesn’t deviate too far from the beaten path for this type of game. The kill, loot, and recycle loop continues to be repeated for a reason – it works.
Vikings: Wolves of Midgard supports local and online co-op, and the journey is far more enjoyable with a few friends who are willing to synergize their builds.

Darksiders: Genesis
The Darksiders series was well-known for its Legend of Zelda-style gameplay, so it came as a surprise to many gamers to hear about the release of Darksiders: Genesis. The top-down helped to evolve the franchise by offering up some great hack-and-slash mechanics and blending them with some very welcome cooperative gameplay.
The finished product is a (roughly) 15-hour-long adventure that players can enjoy alone or with a friend, featuring a small variety of characters, some great puzzle design, fluid combat, and beautiful visuals. This is definitely one of the best co-op games on PS Plus.
