How to Download and Install EndNote | Rutgers University Libraries

1. Go to https://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/endnote. Scroll down the page to the Download EndNote section of the page.  Click on the “EndNote 20 for Windows” or “EndNote 20 for Mac” download link, depending on your system.  Note: these directions are for Windows PC using the Chrome browser.
   
2. Log in with your Rutgers NetID and Password:
   
3. On the next page, download the endnote20 zip file on your computer (click Save).
   Note: Your screen may look different depending on the browser; if so, continue to the next step to Extract the zip file.
4. Open the folder where you have downloaded the zip file. Hover over the file name, then right-click and select Extract All from the drop-down menu:
   
5. A box opens to Select a Destination and Extract Files. Make sure the “Show extracted files when complete” box is checked and click Extract.
   Note: Your screen may look different depending on the browser; if so, continue to the next step to open the Endnote20 folder.
6. You will see the Endnote20 folder. Double-click on it to open and reveal the files inside.
   
7. To begin installation, double-click on the EN20Inst file:
   
8. A box opens to begin installation; click Next to continue: 
   
9. Another box opens; click Accept:
   
10. The next window opens – take a moment to read, then click Next:
    
11. The License Agreement box opens; select the button to accept the agreement, then click Next:
    
12. Select the Typical installation type and click Next:
    
13. The Select Destination window opens; leave the Destination Folder as-is, then click Next:
    
14. The last window appears before installation begins; click Next: 
    Note: – all other applications must be closed for the installation to proceed. If necessary, close the application(s) and click Retry ** Answer “Yes” if asked to allow the EndNote 20 app to make changes to your device. **
15. A box will appear showing the progress of the installation:
    
16. A new box open and shows that EndNote 20 has been successfully installed. Click Finish:
    
17. Go to the Start menu, type in ‘endnote’ and locate the tool on your computer. Then click on Open:
    
18. If you see a window about an update, click Download and Install and follow the prompts:

19.  If an End User License Agreement window appears again, select “I accept the license agreement” and click Next:

20. You may see another box that tells you once again that EndNote 20 was successfully installed. Enter ‘endnote’ in the Start menu box and open the app again:

21. If you see a window which prompts you to either “Open an existing library” or “Create a new library”, make your selection accordingly:

22. After you make your selection, you are now ready to use EndNote:
