How to Fix “Device Driver software was not successfully installed” Error in Windows 7

 

While installing or connecting a USB device to your Windows 7 computer you may see this weird error message “Device driver software was not successfully installed” followed by non-functioning of the device. The error occurs when Windows 7 is unable to locate and install the right drivers for the device being connected to it due to no available driver software, no Internet connectivity or other miscellaneous reasons. Provided that you need to use this device for several reasons, you should fix this error in order to be able to successfully install drivers and get it working. Here is how you can go for it.

Step 1

Try to update the device driver software again and check if the problem is solved. Open Device Manager. To open it, type “devmgmt” in “Start Search” bar and right click “devmgmt” and choose to run the application as administrator. Provide the admin password if prompted.

On the “Device Manager” window, expand each device section and locate the troubling device. you will find a tiny yellow exclamation mark (like the one you see in image below) beside the device not working properly. Right click the device and click “Update driver software”.

Once you click this option, Windows will prompt you to choose how to update your driver software. You can select the first option to look for the latest device drivers online or skip to second option if you have already downloaded the required driver software for the device. Choose which option suits you the best and then follow the on-screen prompts to complete the procedure. When done, connect your device again and check if it works properly or not.

Step 2

If the driver update hasn’t fixed the error and it continues to appear, uninstall and reinstall the driver software. Go back to “Device Manager”, right click the troubling device and click “Uninstall”. Confirm the action when prompted. Follow rest of the on-screen instructions and remove the device driver software. When done, go back to “Device Manager”, right click anywhere in the blank space and click “Scan for hardware changes”. Windows will automatically search for and install the latest driver software for the device. When done, plug your device again and check if it is working or not.

If the drivers aren’t installed successfully yet as indicated by the error, then run the “Add Hardware” wizard to correctly install the device and make it work. Type “hdwwiz” in the “Start Search” field and click “hdwwiz”. If prompted, confirm to run the program. On the “Add Hardware Wizard” screen, click “Next”.

On the next screen, choose how you want to install the troubling hardware. Follow the onscreen instructions and add the device to Windows 7. If you have the device installation media, you can use it during the procedure to install the correct driver software for the device. When done, Windows 7 may ask for a reboot. Do as prompted and then the error should be fixed.
