What are car games?
Driving around in fast cars is something many of us enjoy to do – or would enjoy it, if we got the chance. Video games allow us to pull off maneuvers on four wheels that we’d never attempt on real roads. It’s no surprise, then, that so many of our favourite fast-paced games from over the years feature driving as a major component.The earliest racing games didn’t feature cars at all, because they were too difficult to draw with the limited number of pixels available. 1973’s Space Race by Atari was a competitive game in which two players raced tiny spacecraft from the bottom of the screen to the top. The first proper driving game arrived a year later, with Gran Trak 10, which came with a steering wheel mounted to the front of the arcade cabinet.As graphics improved, racing games became more subtle and compelling. By the 1990s, there was a vibrant marketplace for different sorts of driving games, ranging from fun sofa experiences like Mario Kart to more cerebral simulations like Gran Turismo to full-on arcade experiences like Namco’s Ridge Racer series.Things really changed with the release of Grand Theft Auto by DMA Design in 1997. This was a game where you weren’t just racing around a fixed track: you could get out and shoot people, and steal other cars! Predictably, this caused a fair amount of controversy at the time. But since then, the series has become hugely popular. Things you always find in car games
All of the car games you’ll find here involve driving of one form or another. Most of the time, you’ll be looking at your car from the rear in a 3D perspective, and using the arrow keys to steer it around the environment, avoiding obstacles and getting that winning time. Having said that, there are a few exceptions which incorporate simulation and puzzle elements, and the objectives are slightly different. Sometimes, you’ll get the opportunity to upgrade and improve your car – or even replace it with an entirely new model. Over the course of a single session, you’ll be able to get progressively faster and handle corners better. On the other hand, you might prefer a more immediate experience where you can get straight into the meat of the action. One of the great things about driving games is that there’s always scope for improvement. You can take that corner a little bit sooner, or brake later, and get as close as possible to the perfect racing line. This means that there’s plenty of scope for replay value, and that even a familiar track can be refreshing and novel! Depending on the sort of car game you’re playing, you’ll find that the vehicle handles very differently. In an arcade racer, you won’t have to worry about things like tyre temperature, or traction control, and the laws of physics don’t apply quite as much as they do in the real world. In a more cerebral, simulation-based car game, there are a whole range of factors to manage. Different games also offer different environments to conquer, with the track itself changing the challenge fundamentally.

On the extreme end of the spectrum we have Madalin Stunt Cars 2, where players must navigate an enormous sandbox strewn with loops, ramps and other wacky obstacles. Get some serious air by driving as fast as possible, and cycle through the available vehicles and maps from inside the game itself. If you’re more into progress and customization, you might prefer Stock Car Hero, where you’ll take part in a range of famous stock-car races, earning money and investing in new upgrades along the way. 3D Car Simulator falls somewhere in the middle, allowing players to choose from three different vehicles whose color schemes and lights can be swapped in and out according to personal preference. Car Driving takes more of a career-based approach, except this time you’re racing around the city streets rather than a track – and there’s an amazing variety of vehicles to unlock. Among the more outlandish styles of driving to become popular in recent decades is the famous ‘drift’, where your car slides round corners in a continuous skid. There are a few games that put this to the forefront, including Drift Hunters and Russian Car Drift 3D. To succeed in either of these games, you’ll need to practise if you want to take corners like a pro. Finally, we have Grand Prix games, based on the world’s most popular form of motorsport, Formula 1. Monaco Grand Prix is a 1:1 recreation of the PlayStation title of the same name, which famously brought 3D racing into the home console for the first time. There’s a raft of options available to tailor the experience to your liking, including exhibitions, arcade races, and a full Grand Prix season. On top of that, there’s the option to create your own F1 team and lead it to glory, or just to play against a single friend in split-screen multiplayer. Grand Prix Hero takes a slightly different approach – it’s based around the same format as Stock Car Hero, and comes with many of the same features, including the ability to alter the vehicle to suit the demands of the track. Finally, if you’re looking for something a little more rugged, you might consider 4×4 Offroader. In this title, you’ll be riding a giant truck across a wilderness – or, if you’d prefer, a Jeep, SUV, or pick-up. Whatever your choice of vehicle, it’s sure to be a wild ride – just be sure that you repair the damage you receive along the way!
