Undertale’s Sans Appears In Japanese Rhythm Game As Playable Character

Sans, a major character in the cult indie game Undertale, will appear as a playable character in Pop’n Music. The Japanese rhythm game also introduces three new arrangements of songs from the Undertale soundtrack.

First published in 1998 by Konami, the Pop’n Music series features high-energy songs and cartoon characters grooving on the sidelines. Players can test their coordination by pressing colored buttons in time with the song’s rhythm. Pop’n Music has launched home and arcade versions and more than 20 entries in the series — the newest, Pop’n Music UniLab, was released in arcades earlier this year.

The Pop’n Music team announced Sans’ arrival in the rhythm game via a tweet in Japanese. The post links the Pop’n Music website where players can learn more about the game. Attached to the tweet is a promotional graphic featuring Sans and the three new song arrangements.

Composed by developer Toby Fox in FL Studio, Undertale’s soundtrack has been lauded by critics and beloved by gamers. At the Independent Games Festival in 2016, Undertale was nominated for Excellence in Audio Award. Several of the most popular songs from Undertale are playable in rhythm game Groove Coaster with the purchase of a DLC. New arrangements of “Hopes and Dreams,” “Battle Against a Ture Hero,” and “MEGALOVANIA” are coming to Pop’n Music.

Fox retweeted the original post by the Pop’n Music team with comments in Japanese. Replying to his own tweet, Fox translated the announcement to English. The developer and composer note that in comparison to Sans’ appearance in Undertale, Sans has a more cute visual style in Pop’n Music to fit the game. Fox also provides his thoughts on the rhythm game, praising the new arrangements and animation. “It’s a bit of a dream come true for me!” Fox said.

Undertale fans may be dismayed to learn that Pop’n Music is Japan-only. Many eagerly await new content from Fox, who is sending out newsletter updates about his ongoing project, Deltarune. The first issue of the newsletter was released earlier this week.
