Mỗi độ Tết đến là anh chị em hàng xóm láng giềng lại được dịp tụ họp, ngồi cùng nhau ôn chuyện cũ. Chắc chắn không thể thiếu những tiếng cười giòn giã của những tụ trò chơi dân gian với người tham gia đủ cả già, trẻ, lớn, bé trong nhà.

Cùng ôn lại chút kỉ niệm với vài Từ vựng về những trò chơi dân gian phổ biến ngày Tết của Việt Nam để chuẩn bị đón Xuân nhiều tiếng cười nhé!

1. Bamboo swings /ˌbæmˈbuː swɪŋz / (n.): đánh đu

Game rule: The swings have two bamboo sticks attached by a wooden platform. One or two players stand on the platform and swing themselves high in the air to catch a prize hanging from the top of the swing’s frame.

2. Mandarin square capturing /ˈmændərɪn skwer ˈkæptʃərɪŋ/ (n.): ô ăn quan

Game rule: Before starting, the players have to divide a rectangle into ten smaller ones and add two semicircles to two shorter sides of the rectangle. Next, put five small pebbles in each square and a larger pebble (hòn sỏi) in each mandarin’s boxes. Players move pebbles around and try to acquire as many as possible to become the winner

3. Tug of war /ˌtʌɡ əv ˈwɔːr/ (n.): kéo co

Game rule: Two teams pull against each other at the opposite end of a rope, and each team tries to pull the other over a line on the ground.

4. Human chinese chess /ˈhjuːmən ˌtʃaɪˈniːz tʃes/ (n.): cờ người

Game rule: The rule is similar to the Chinese chess, but it is unique as the various chess pieces are humans. One side consists of 16 boys and the other of 16 girls.

5. Sack jumping /sæk dʒʌmpɪŋ/ (n.): nhảy bao bố

Game rule: The players have to stand in a sack, grasp its rim (vành miệng bao bố) and jump to the finish line.

6. French-suited playing cards /frentʃ-ˈsuːtɪd ˈpleɪ.ɪŋ kɑːdz/ (n.): bài Tây

Game rule: The most popular Vietnamese version is tiến lên. 13 cards are dealt to each of the 4 players in the game and then each one takes turns playing some kinds of card combinations (tổ hợp bài).

7. Bingo /ˈbɪŋɡəʊ/ (n.): lô tô

Game rule: Each player has a card with numbers on. Numbers are called out in no particular order and the first player whose numbers are all called out, or who has a line of numbers called out, wins.
