Organizations all around the world use OKRs to drive strategic direction and focus their efforts on achieving company objectives.

OKR software can help you with the process of setting and tracking OKRs at the organizational, team, and individual levels. Adoption of the OKR framework and the software usually comes hand in hand.

To save you time, and help you make the best choice for your needs, I’ve compiled a list of the top OKR software on the market today.

What is OKR Software?

OKR software (objective & key results software) is the software framework used to develop the strategy and process objectives that connect individual and team goals to top-level organizational objectives. It’s used to build out the initial strategy and track the OKR progress for all the objectives involved.

OKR software is a tried-and-true way to improve the alignment between your individual employees and the company’s top-level business goals. It does this by creating a transparent and cascading framework that visually shows employees how their own individual OKRs contribute to the company’s strategic goals, and vice versa. It’s similar to an online goal tracker for all levels of your company.

How I Selected the Best OKR Software

I’m happy to explain my process if you’re interested to know how I created this list. To start off, I used recent market data to prepare a long list of all the top OKR software with positive user ratings and a full set of features. I then drilled down into each OKR tool’s features and functionality to see how each system compared to the next.

Lastly, to whittle my selections down even further, I used my selection criteria below as a framework for my final selections. That’s why all my top choices in this list score well in the criteria below.

Selection Criteria

Here’s a quick summary of the selection and evaluation criteria I used to build this list. As I assessed each system, I dug into the answers to each of these questions:

  • User Interface (UI): Can you plan and set goals using a variety of visualizations? I like to see Gantt and Kanban charts, spreadsheets, and OKR goals progress reports and analysis drill-downs.
  • Usability: Is onboarding new users easy? Does the company offer good tech support, user support, tutorials, and training? Is there an online community or forum around the product where you can find answers to common questions?
  • Software Integrations: Is it easy to connect with other tools, such as performance management software, talent management software, or employee management systems? Can you import objectives and goals designed in other software? Are there any pre-built integrations? Do they have an API to support custom software integrations?
  • Value for Price: How appropriate is the price for the features, capabilities, and use case? Is pricing clear, transparent, and flexible? Is there a free version that could work for startups or small team goals?

OKR Software: Frequently Asked Questions

Still trying to wrap your head around what OKR software is and how it can help your organization? These answers to frequently asked questions are a great place to start:

What are OKRs?

OKR stands for “Objectives and Key Results,” which are goals and objectives for business planning. The OKR framework helps companies define their objectives, track their progress, and analyze their results.

There is typically one Objective, which is a high-level, qualitative goal that a group or team is focused on. Then there are Key Results, usually three of them, which are quantitative metrics that point towards the designated Objective. By quantifying a specific numerical goal, your organization will be able to objectively measure how successful the team was in reaching it.

OKR software (Objective & Key Results software) is the tool organizations use to develop the strategy and process objectives that connect both the team and the organization. In many ways, OKR software is similar to an online goal tracker that covers all levels of an organization.

For more information on OKRs, take a look at What Are OKRs and How Can You Use Them.

What features are included in OKR software?

Here’s a shortlist of the main features you should double-check to help you find the best OKR software solution for you. As you’re assessing your top choices, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Feedback & review tools: Is it easy for team leads to talk to staff and evaluate employee performance? Does it facilitate peer-to-peer communication and encouragement with continuous feedback cycles? Is high performance gamified or otherwise made more accessible?
  • Goal Maps: Does the tool make it easy to see the higher objectives and how key results tie into them? Does the tool do well to align individual responsibilities with greater company goals? Is it easy to track progress of both team OKRs and individual goals?
  • Employee Voice: Are there features for employee surveys, comments, and insights? Does the tool elevate these voices in a meaningful way?
  • Reporting and Insights: Does the tool track goals with real-time reports and insights that can be easily visualized, shared, and analyzed? Are reports to track OKRs customizable? Are there ready-to-use templates available?

What are some examples of popular OKRs?

You’ll want to tailor your OKRs specifically to your own organization. However, here’s some general information to get your creative juices flowing.

An HR manager might work towards an Objective of reducing employee turnover from from 20% to 10%. The corresponding key result would be the turnover metric on a quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis. To achieve a reduction in turnover, the activities could include: increased performance reviews, more team 1:1’s, creating learning and development plans for all employees, offering more employee incentives, etc.

For more details on OKR examples you can tailor for your own organization, take a look at Human Resource OKR Examples and Operations OKR Examples.

What is the difference between OKRs and KPIs?

OKRs vs KPIs—what are they? Are they just different terms for the same thing? No, they’re not — but they are closely related.

KPIs stand for Key Performance Indicators. They are a series of quantitative goals that compartmentalize progress in bite-sized chunks of measurable data (e.g., social media impressions or sales conversion).

OKRs, on the other hand, are a goal-setting framework. For each goal (or objective), there is a specific metric that will measure whether the team has achieved the goal or not.

The KPI methodology is a straightforward approach to achieving specific goals, and those goals can even be a part of an OKR framework. However, the OKR methodology as a whole is more advanced and ambitious. Typically, OKRs require a big team-wide push to achieve the results, though they should still be attainable.
