Family Game Night Success

The way to make a family game night a success is to make sure everyone is on board with the games you are choosing to play.

Assess all of the ages of the people in the family. How old are the kids, are they young and need help? Can they team up with an adult or older child? What types of games do you all like?

Perhaps you can all vote on a game to play with the family and which ever game gets the most votes wins.

Otherwise you could all choose one family game to play and then pull one out of a hat. After you have played, if you have more time, pull another one out, so everyone’s game gets played.

1. Drawing Game

This fun family game is sure to get the laughs! Grab a piece of paper per family member and fold it into three pieces.

Get everyone to sit around the table without peeking at what each other is doing! Unfold the top third and get drawing – your first job, the head. Once you’re down, fold it over backwards (so no-one can see). Pass it left!

Now, everyone’s job is to draw the body. Again, fold it over so it can’t be seen. Pass left again. Now to draw the legs.

You can be as imaginative as you like with this fun family game. In fact, the more fun you have with it, the better the results. Unfold and voila! Have a good old laugh at your creations.

2. Memory Game

Ready to test everyone’s memory. This is a great family game to play at home for all ages.

Let one person be in and tell them to go around and collect ten objects from around the house. Get everyone to sit around the objects with pencil and paper in front of them (but not in their hands!). Now pop a one minute timer on. Everyone needs to study the objects to see how many they can remember.

Once the timer is up, throw a sheet over the objects or take them away. Players can grab the pencil and paper and have to write down as many objects as they can remember. A true test of memory.

3. Jenga

Did you know you can get giant-sized jenga these days? But don’t worry, even the normal version is plenty of fun.

Set it up and go around the family and let everyone take a turn. The one to make the whole thing tip over loses! Who will it be?

4. Spoons

Family game to play at home spoons

Spoons is one of our favourite family games to play at home on a game night or special occasion. It’s a simple card game where the aim is to finish the game with four of a kind.
Each player is dealt four cards from two shuffled decks. There are spoons in the middle of the circle (one less than how many players there are).

The designated dealer starts by picking the top card from the pile in front of them, deciding whether it will help them get four of a kind, then discarding a card to the player to their left. This then continues around the circle until the last person discards a card on a pile.

The first person to get four of a kind grabs a spoon. When the others see they must try to get one too. The person who doesn’t get a spoon loses.

5. Two Truths, One Lie

Take it in turns: state two truths about yourself and one lie. Now it’s up to the rest of the family to work out which one the lie is.

This is a fun game to play with family at home that will make you learn more and more about each other by the end of the game.

6. Would You Rather?

Kids what would you rather questions

A great way to get to know the entire family a little better. Go around in a circle taking it in turns to ask questions, such as:

  • Would you rather drink a cup of tomato sauce or BBQ sauce?
  • Would you rather be a pig or a cow?
  • Would you rather have 20 fingers or 20 toes?
  • Would you rather fly or X-ray vision?

7. Dominoes

It’s one of those classic games for families or anyone really, that’s so much fun. It also takes a good degree of teamwork to strengthen that family bond.

Get everyone to help set up a domino run together. You can map it out, or simply go for gold until you use up all those dominoes. Now it’s time to knock them over and enjoy the show!

8. Hangman

Hangman family game

Have you introduced the kids to hangman yet? It is such a great word game for kids. The rules are simple: grab a piece of paper and pick someone to be in. They have to pick a word and draw lines for each letter of their chosen word (without telling anyone).

The family gets guessing letters at a time. For every wrong answer, part of the hangman is drawn. If a player guesses the word before reaching the hangman, it’s their turn. If not, the person goes again.

9 . Scategories

You can play the board game, or just make your own. To create your own make a list of 10 items on a page. Each person has the same. This could be for example:

Food, Tv show, Country, city, piece of clothing etc. To choose a letter write all of the letters on a piece of paper, blindfold one person who will point to a letter to start with.

Once you have your letter, the timer starts for 60 seconds and everyone must try to fill in their page with things that start with that letter. Whoever has the most at the end wins. If people have the same answer for any category, it is 0 points. It is better to think of something that nobody else will think of.

10. Charades

Such a fun family game to play at home for all ages, Charades is a game where you have to “act out” a phrase without speaking, while the other members of your team try to guess what the phrase is.

The aim of this family game is for your team to guess the phrase as quickly as possible. Makes a great party game too!

11. Pie Face

If you haven’t heard of this family board game, then it’s time to go shopping. After all, if it involves whipped cream, it’s sure to be fun!

Take it in turns to turn the handle and just hope you’re not the one to get splat in the face! Every time you manage to turn the handle and avoid the cream, you get a point. Winner is the one with the most points, and the loser…will have a bit of washing up to do.

12. Uno

There’s nothing quite like a great family game of uno. Dig it out of the back of the cupboard and set everyone up with their seven cards. Let the games begin.

The winner is the first one to get rid of all their cards first, but the fun doesn’t end there. Let the remaining players keep going until there’s no-one left in. You can now rank the family from first to last and get ready for the rematch.

13. Headbandz (or What am I?)

Headbandz Family game to play at home

If you have the boardgame then it is all set up for you. Otherwise this is a simple family game of Who (or what) am I. Each player needs to wear a headband, you can also use post it notes if you don’t have one. You each choose something for the person next to you to have to guess. Go around in a circle asking yes/no questions. Yes means you get another turn, no means it is the next persons turn. The winner is the person who guesses who they are first.

14. Paper Plane Contest

It’s time to teach the kids about aerodynamics. Give everyone an A4 piece of paper and set them the task of folding their best paper airplane. Find a good spot in the house to launch them and see how far they make it.

Now, it’s time to Google. Give everyone the opportunity to jump online to see if they can find any tips or hints on how to make their plane go further. Round 2! Keep going until you discover the best way to build a paper plane.

15. Nerf Wars

What’s not to love about a nerf shootout? All you need is nerf guns on hand and the rest is up to the imagination. You can set up a tower of plastic cups, draw some targets onto paper and stick them onto the wall, or even print off some targets. Take it in turns to ready…aim…fire. And keep a tally of who gets the best shots in.

16. Pig

Put those maths skills to the test with this highly entertaining family game to play at home any time. All you need is one die and you’re ready to go.

The goal: make it to 100. The first person rolls and adds up as they go, tallying points to get to 100. Here’s the catch, if they roll a 1, not only is their turn over, but their points go straight back to zero and it’s the next person’s turn.

17. Guessing Game

It’s time to put the whole family to the test. Pour out three different drinks, or sauces, spreads, or anything you like and want to compare – just don’t let the family see! Pop a blindfold on each player and one by one let them taste test. See if they can guess what each one is.

You can keep notes and reveal all at the end to see who the winner was.

18. Hot Potato

Do you have a family playlist yet? If not, it’s time to create one. It will make this game ten times more fun! Turn on the music and grab an object to be the hot potato! As the name suggests, ideally use a potato, but really you can use anything you like. Have fun throwing around the hot potato. It’s bound to have everyone in stitches.

19. Sardines

Sometimes if you’re cooped up inside thanks to the rain, you need to get the kids moving around a bit. This game is perfect if you have the indoor space.

One person is it and they go and hide. Everyone else counts to ten and goes to find them. Once they find the person hiding, they hide with them. You guessed it, things are going to get a little squishy (with plenty of giggles)! The last one to find everyone is now in.

20. Fruit and Veg Building

This one is quick and easy and sure to cause a lot of havoc. Grab all your fruits and veggies and plonk them on the table. This game is best for just two people (depending on what your produce supplies are like). Set a two minute timer and let them get building!

The highest tower at the end is the winner and they stay in the verse the next person.

21. Lego Challenge

Do you have lots of Lego lying around (who doesn’t!). Time to set a family challenge. Set the timer for any length of time you like and get creating.Have a judging competition at the end to come up with a winner!

And there you have it. Hours of fun bonding time at home that will create memories to last a lifetime. You never get too old for games!

22. Suck It Up

All you need for this game are straws and lots of pieces of paper cut into squares.

Give everyone the same amount of paper and let the competition begin! Using just the straw, they have to suction the paper from one pile to another. The first one to finish, wins.

23. Guess The Bag

Grab some bags (that aren’t see-through) from around the house and put an object in each one. Let the family take it in turns popping their hands in and seeing if they can guess what’s inside without looking. Give them one point for each right answer and see if you can crown a winner at the end.

24. Shadow Puppets

Doesn’t matter whether it’s the middle of the day, simply close the blinds and create a dark space and grab the torch. Even better if you have multiple torches so everyone can have a go at once.

Start creating shadow puppets – and you can even set the kids a challenge. See if they can come up with their very own story.

25. Story Writer

This is a really creative family game to play at home. One person starts with a piece of paper and pen and writes a sentence to start a story. Then you go around in the circle where each person continues to add a sentence. Keep going around and around reading out the story once you get the page full.
