Funny Games (2007)
if only every film about psychopathic and sadistic killers was as painstaking and self controlled as the fucked up masterpiece that is Michael Haneke’s remake of his own 1997 film Funny Games. although the pacing changes dramatically after the most significant death in the film, it makes sense because the director doesn’t want you to feel interested when the killers aren’t on screen. we didn’t press play to watch two people struggle to help each other — and we don’t care! it’s a genius way for Haneke to connect with his audience and it’s draining yet fascinating to watch.
we as the audience are the perpetrators and villains along with Paul and Peter. we don’t have any power at all to change what’s happening — we can stop watching or we can encourage them to continue ruining this innocent family’s life. we want to see them suffer.
