Instagram video dimensions

How do “dimensions” differ from “size”? Most people in the social media world use the terms interchangeably, but in this case we’re using dimensions to talk more specifically about length or height and width of videos.

Reels dimensions

Instagram video dimensions for Reels are:

  • Vertical (1080 pixels x 1920 pixels)

Instagram Reels are designed to be viewed full-screen, vertically, and on mobile devices. The best way to make sure your Reels are the correct size is to shoot and edit them directly on your phone.

Tip: Don’t forget to leave some room at the bottom of your Reel for the video caption! The bottom fifth of the screen is where the caption will be displayed.

In-feed video dimensions

Instagram video dimensions for in-feed videos are:

  • Vertical (1080 x 608 pixels)
  • Horizontal (1080 x 1350 pixels)

Instagram in-feed videos can be either square or horizontal, but keep in mind that the Instagram app doesn’t rotate on mobile. If you choose to share a widescreen video, it may show up with black or white borders on either side.

Tip: To avoid these annoying black boxes, stick to vertical videos.

Stories dimensions

Instagram video dimensions for Stories are:

  • Vertical (min: 1080 x 608 pixels, max: 1080 x 1920)

Like Reels, Stories are designed to be watched vertically, so make sure you film your video on your phone or in portrait mode.

Tip: If you want your Story to fill the whole screen, shoot your video with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution.

Live video dimensions

Dimensions for Instagram Live are:

  • Vertical (1080 x 1920 pixels)

All Instagram Live videos are streamed directly from mobile devices and must be shot vertically.

Tip: The Instagram app will not rotate with your phone, so be sure to stay in portrait mode throughout your broadcast.

Instagram video aspect ratio

Reels aspect ratio

The aspect ratio for Instagram Reels is:

  • 9:16

The aspect ratio of a video is the width in relation to the height. The first digit always represents the width and the second represents the height.

It’s important that your videos stay within the Instagram recommended aspect ratios so that none of your content is cut off.

  • 4:5 (1.91:1 to 9:16 are supported)

You can also upload Instagram feed videos in square formats, using a 1080×1080 pixel format or 1:1 aspect ratio.

Tip: The majority of Instagram users access the app through a mobile device. Instagram videos in vertical or portrait modes will show up better on these devices.

Stories aspect ratio

The aspect ratio for Instagram Stories is:

  • 9:16

Like Reels and Live broadcasts, Stories perform best when shot in vertical or portrait mode.

Tip: More than 500 million Instagram accounts watch Stories every day. If you haven’t experimented with this format yet, it’s time to start.

Live video aspect ratio

The aspect ratio for Instagram Live video is:

  • 9:16

Luckily, the aspect ratio of Instagram Live is set within the app. Keep in mind, you can’t change the size once you’ve started.
