In this article, you will learn how to install Kali Linux in UTM on an Apple M1 Laptop. Virtual box and VMware have not yet started supporting the Apple M1 chip and spending 100$ on Parallels just for running a Kali VM is a waste, so learning this article will let you install Kali linux on UTM for free.

- Download Kali Linux ARM image
- Importing Kali ARM image into UTM
- Install Kali Linux
- Fix display resolution and remove disk
Overview on UTM
UTM is a system emulator and a virtual machine host for Mac OS and iOS. It is based of QEMU
and it allows you to run Linux , Windows and more operating systems.It is free of cost and can be easily downloaded by any Mac OS user.UTM is a lifesaver for anyone who does not want to spend 100$ on parallels because Virtualbox and Vmware have not yet supported Apple M1 chips.
Overview on Kali Linux
Kali Linux is an advanced penetration testing Linux distribution based on Debian equipped with more than 700 hacking tools. It is maintained and funded by Offensive security and receives updates frequently and is one of the best operating systems available for your pentesting purposes.
Step 1 : Download and install UTM
1.Go to https://mac.getutm.app/
2.Click on Download
3.Open the dmg file and drag it to Applications.

Step 2 : Download Kali Linux ARM image
1.Go to https://www.kali.org/get-kali/#kali-bare-metal
2.Select Apple M1 and choose the ARM offline installer
3.Download the file in torrent for faster speed.
Step 3 : Importing Kali ARM Image to UTM
1.Go to UTM and click on File → New Virtual Machine
2.Enter virtual machine name and select style as Operating System
3.Next , Go to System tab and choose Architecture as ARM64 and system field as “QEMU 6.1”
4.Give the memory from 3048mb to 4096mb for a stable and fast operating system.
5.Next, Go to drives and click on Import drive and select the Arm iso file you have downloaded.

6.Later, click on New drive and give the size you need for the new drive for the Kali to be installed on it.
7.Next,Go to the Display tab and enable Fit to Screen and Retina mode for a better resolution.
8.Last and final is to Go to the Sharing tab and enable Clipboard sharing for copying and pasting between 2 operating systems.
9.Click on Save and start the VM to install Kali Linux now.
Step 4 : Install Kali Linux
1.After the VM boots, Click on Graphical Install
2.Select the Language as English and Country as India.

3.Wait for a little time for the DHCP network to be configured and enter your hostname & domain name when asked.
4.Enter your username and password next.
5.Select your clock time.
6.Now, select the partitioning method as Guided – Use entire disk
7.Select the disk which you created in Step 3
8.Next, select the partitioning scheme as All files on one partition and click on Finish changes and write changes to disk.
9.Wait for a minute and you will be able to see the Software selection screen where you can select the tools and environments you want to be installed as default with Kali.
10.Select them and click on continue. Wait for 10 minutes for the tools to get installed.
11.After the tools are installed , you should be able to see Installation complete message and we need to reboot now.
Step 5 : Remove disk and change display settings
1.After you have rebooted, you will be able to see that you are asked to install the Kali linux again.

2.Do not fret , its because we have not removed the Installer iso from the drives, so close the VM and go to the Drives tab
3.After going to the drives tab, remove the installer os.
4.Now start the VM and you can see that we are granted with the Kali linux boot screen.
5.The last and final step is to install spice tools so that the clipboard can be shared and the display can be resized.
6.Login to Kali linux and use the following command to install Spice tools:
sudo apt install spice-vdagent spice-webdavd
7.After you have installed the Spice tools , Go to Kali Linux search bar and go to Display
8.Select the resolution as 1400×900 and apply the changes.
9.We now have our Kali Linux installed with full screen and can also share the clipboard
