Installing Client Software

The following sections discuss how to install, upgrade, reinstall, and uninstall Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0 client software.

During Proxy Server Setup, you complete a Client Installation/Configuration dialog box. The options in this dialog box are used to create a client configuration file, which is installed on the server, along with a client Setup program. For information about using the Proxy Server Setup program and completing the Client Installation/Configuration dialog box, see Configuring Client Setup Information in Installing Server Software.

The following software components are installed from the server on a Proxy client computer:

  • The WinSock Proxy client application.
  • A shared client configuration file, Mspclnt.ini.
  • A shared client Local Address Table (LAT) file, Msplat.txt.

You can modify or edit the default settings for these components after they are installed. For more information, see Administering Clients.

You can run client Setup by using the Setup program on the server computer, by using the command line, or by running unattended client Setup using Systems Management Server (SMS).

Note
You can run client Setup and install Proxy client software on a dual-boot computer. You need to run client Setup twice (once for each operating system). After the first installation, you must specify a different client directory. For example, install client software on the Windows NT operating system, and then install client software on the Windows 95 operating system in a different directory.

You can set up a client computer by using either the Setup program or a Web browser.

  1. On the client computer, connect to the Mspclnt share on the server.
  2. On the Mspclnt share, run Setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are using a Web browser to set up a client computer, you can use the following procedure. If the browser settings configured by client Setup are not appropriate for a particular client computer, you must use the Web browser’s own configuration interface to specify the server name and the protocol port number. For more information, see Configuring Web Proxy Client Applications in Administering Clients.

  1. From a Web browser on the client computer, connect to the installation page on the server by typing http://servername/Msproxy, where servername is the name of the server computer.
  2. After the client installation Web page is loaded, follow the on-screen instructions to run Setup and install client components.

Optionally, you can install Proxy Server client software from a command prompt. The command syntax is as follows:

setup
[/r] [/u] [/q[1, t]]

where

/r reinstalls Proxy client software.

/u uninstalls the WinSock Proxy client application but leaves shared components.

Note
The /r and /u options cannot be used with 16-bit clients—for example, computers running the Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Microsoft Windows for Workgroups operating systems.

/q runs client Setup in quiet mode. The screen displays progress windows and a Setup Completion dialog box, but does not prompt the user to approve or modify installation settings. Quiet Setup always installs the client software into the default Mspclnt directory.

/q1 is the same as the /q option, but also hides the Setup Completion dialog box.

/qt is the same as the /q option, but also hides the progress windows and the Setup Completion dialog box. (After installation completes, the client computer is restarted if required by the Setup program.) This option is not available for 16-bit clients.

Note
You can use quiet mode only for an initial setup. If a client is already
installed, you cannot reinstall or uninstall it by using the /q option.

Important

You must use a slash (/), and not a dash (-), when specifying command options.

Proxy Server clients can also be installed or uninstalled from a remote computer by using the unattended client Setup command. The command syntax for installing clients is as follows:

setup /qt for 32-bit clients
–Or–
setup /q1 for 16-bit clients

The command syntax for uninstalling clients is as follows:

setup /qt /u for 32-bit clients
–Or–
setup /q1 /u for 16-bit clients

The file named Proxy.ini (located in the Mspclnt share on the server) sets the directory into which a Proxy Server client is installed by the client Setup program in unattended mode. It has no effect on the standard Proxy Server client Setup program. This is useful for performing unattended client installations on computers that do not have local hard disks with write access, such as docking laptops and some NEC computer models. For more information, see Using the Unattended Setup Configuration File in Installing Server Software.

The client Proxy.ini file has a single section and entry as follows:

[Proxy Setup Install]
Install Dir=C:\Mspclnt

Note
The client Proxy.ini file resides on the Proxy Server compact disc and cannot be edited there. It is recommended that you copy the entire contents of the Proxy Server compact disc to a shared network drive on the computer that runs Proxy Server. You can then edit the file and run unattended client Setup by connecting to the shared network drive.

Microsoft Proxy Server provides Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) support for automating installation of client software. The SMS files are installed in the Clients subdirectory of the Proxy Server directory on the server. (The default is C:\Msp\Clients.) For more information, see Configuring SMS for Unattended Client Setup in Installing Server Software.

SMS support for all client platforms uses the same package definition file (PDF), Mspclnt.pdf. To add SMS support, this file must be imported by using the SMS Administrator program.

For 32-bit Windows-based clients, the Smssetup program automates installing and uninstalling of client software and manages automatic system restarts for these processes. For 16-bit Windows-based clients, only automated installing is supported. The command syntax for installing clients is as follows:

setup /l smssetup.lst /qt for 32-bit clients
–Or–
setup /l smssetup.lst /q1 for 16-bit clients

where /l specifies the file to be used with the setup command (in this case, smssetup.lst), rather than the default file (setup.lst).

The command syntax to uninstall a 32-bit Proxy Server client is as follows:

setup /l smssetup.lst /qt /u

The Mspclnt share on the server must be copied from, or used directly as, the distribution source for the client Setup and client Uninstall packages.

You can follow the same procedure to upgrade a client from a Version 2.0 Release Candidate, Version 2.0 Beta, or Version 1.0 product.

  1. On the client computer, connect to the Mspclnt share on the server that
has Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 installed.

  2. On the Mspclnt share, run Setup.exe and follow the
    on-screen instructions.

Note
When a client computer’s operating system is upgraded (including the installation of an operating system service pack), the WinSock Proxy client components
can be overwritten. After you upgrade a client’s operating system, run Microsoft Proxy Server client Setup to reinstall the WinSock Proxy client.

If you want to restore missing files or change client Setup program settings, you can use the Proxy Server client Setup program or Control Panel to reinstall Proxy Server client software.

  1. On the client computer, open the Microsoft Proxy Client program group, and click Setup.

Or, connect to the Mspclnt share on the server and rerun client Setup from there, as described in Running Client Setup.
  2. In the Client Setup dialog box, click Reinstall, and follow the on-screen
    instructions.

You can also reinstall Microsoft Proxy Server by using Control Panel for client computers running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.

  1. On the client computer, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  3. Click Microsoft Proxy Client, click Add/Remove, and follow the on-screen
    instructions.

You can use the Microsoft Proxy Client program group, the Proxy Server client Setup program, or Control Panel to uninstall Proxy Server client software.

  1. In the Microsoft Proxy Client program group, click Uninstall.
  2. In the Uninstall Proxy Client dialog box, click Yes.

You can also uninstall Proxy Server client software by using the client Setup program, but you must be connected to the Mspclnt share on the server.

  1. In the Microsoft Proxy Client program group, click Setup.
Or, connect to the Mspclnt share on the server and run client Setup from there, as described in
    Running Client Setup.
  2. Click Remove All and follow the on-screen instructions.

You can also uninstall Proxy Server client software by using Control Panel.

The Microsoft Proxy Server client Setup program creates a log file, C:\Mpcsetup.log. If you encounter problems with Setup, you can review the log file by using any text editor (such as Microsoft WordPad or Microsoft Notepad). If you call Microsoft for assistance with Setup issues, you should have this file available for review. It contains valuable information beyond the messages that are displayed to the user.

Note
The client Setup log is overwritten each time Proxy Server client software is installed.
