Posting a resume on LinkedIn is a HUGE mistake
LinkedIn has given us the ability to upload our resumes directly onto our profiles. Since this is a professional networking site and the resume is our professional calling card, what could possibly go wrong? In support of The LinkedIn Butterfly Effect, here is why uploading your resume to your LinkedIn profile page is a huge mistake:
If you upload your resume, it must be consistent with the resume that you send to employers. If the resume you send to the recruiter does not match the resume that is on your LinkedIn profile, It will bring up many question marks. This can cost you the chance to interview and the job.
Your LinkedIn profile page is generally “static” once you’ve uploaded all of your information. You would not constantly update it as it is a “catch-all” featuring your skills, experience and abilities. You can update the profile page when you have a new career focus, new skills or experiences to share. It would be impossible to update the profile every time you apply for a different job opportunity.
The resume is generally a dynamic marketing piece. You want to change it for every job to honestly reflect your relevant experience and most appropriate skills for that job.
Your LinkedIn profile does enough to sell the professional you on LinkedIn. There is no need to upload your resume to the profile too. Save the resume for the actual job application.
