Shining Stars Roar At 2019 Sea Games

Philippines 2019 Southeast Asian Games

53 is the magic number for Singapore Sports School at the Philippines 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The Sports School’s past and present athletes who were part of the Team Singapore 659-strong contingent returned home with 53 medals – 13 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze. Team Singapore also achieved a whopping 53 golds out of the total medal haul of 167 at the 2019 SEA Games held from 30 November to 11 December 2019 in Philippines. This is the Sports School’s best medal contribution in proportion to the contingent’s total medal tally yet.

The 30th edition of the much-awaited biennial sports extravaganza was nothing short of action-packed and exhilarating as 96 of the Sports School’s past and present student-athletes put their best foot forward against the region’s best. They gave the school much reason to celebrate as 64 of them were podium finishers. This includes 29 out of the 43 debutants who were decked with SEA Games medals at their first go at the highly competitive games itself.

Among the highlights of the 2019 SEA Games was the all-Singapore and all-Sports School finals between table tennis players, Koen Pang Yew En and Clarence Chew Zhe Yu. 17-year-old Koen capped off a wonderful SEA Games debut by defeating Clarence in straight sets to win the Men’s Singles title. Koen is the first Singapore-born male to win the Men’s Singles title. Koen, Clarence and Josh Chua Shao Ha were part of the first all local-born 4-member Men’s Table Tennis team to be fielded in the Games since 1997.

Debutants – Constance Lien Tian-En and Sheena Soh – went into the record books as they won gold medals in Jiu Jitsu and Underwater Hockey, which are new sports introduced at this year’s SEA Games. Badminton’s Loh Kean Yew was also the first Singaporean to make it to the Men’s Singles finals since 2007. After a tightly fought game against Malaysian Lee Zii Jia, Kean Yew settled for a silver medal. Also, the all-Sports School Air Rifle quartet who represented Singapore returned home with at least one medal each. It was the same for the nine Team Sports School fencers who clinched at least one medal each in various events, including Amita Berthier who retained her Women’s Foil individual gold first won in 2017. She also won the Team gold.

Veteran bowler New Hui Fen’s hat trick of gold medals which includes 2 individual titles, has made her the best performer among Team Sports School at this year’s Games. Three National Records in swimming were also set by 6-time gold medallist Amanda Lim Xiang Qi in the Women’s 50m Freestyle and 4x100m Freestyle Relay, and by debutant Maximillian Ang Wei in the Men’s 200m Breaststroke.

As the SEA Games is an important milestone in every student-athlete’s journey, they face tremendous pressure and anxiety before and during the Games. However, together with the rest of Singapore, we witnessed our shining stars show up with high spirits and confidence. They rose above the challenges to give good finishes or achieve their personal bests.
