- The term proprietary is derived from the Latin word ‘proprietas’ meaning property.
- It is a software which is limited in terms of its functionality.

- Public Domain Software: A software that is in the public domain, that is, the copyright has been explicitly given away by its owner and thus nobody owns it. Anybody is entitled to use such software for any purpose, including modifying it, giving it away and selling it in its original or modified form.
- Freeware Software: It is a software that is available free of cost for use and distribution but which is copyrighted by its developer, who retains the rights to control its distribution, modify it and sell it in the future. It is typically distributed without its source code, thus preventing modification by its users. For example, Google Chrome, Adobe PDF Reader, Internet Explorer, etc.
- Shareware: A software that is initially free and can be distributed to others as well, but needs to be paid for after a stipulated period. Once the stipulated period or the trial period is over and if the user wants to continue using the software after this trial period, they will be charged for it. For example, AntiVirus, WinZip, etc.
