#36 Evil Dead The Game
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Who’s ready to get groovy? All of you? Outstanding. Evil Dead The Game is exactly what it sounds like. Heck, there are multiple versions of Ash Williams that you can play as!
Anyway, this is a 4v1 title where four of you will be Evil Dead characters trying to survive hordes of enemies and get through a set of tasks. The fifth player will be a monster who slowly gains power and send more dangers at you in order to kill you all.
Survive or kill, those are your only options.
#35 Dying Light 2: Stay Human
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Dying Light 2: Stay Human is the sequel to the title that definitely gave people a reason for co-op zombie play, even if it was just to see if they could bound around the zombies with a variety of parkour moves. Don’t worry, those moves are still an option in this game, and it’s still highly encouraged.
Also like before, you’ll have to be careful with how you handle the zombie threat, not the least of which is because you’ll have to either procure or create your own weapons to take down the zombies. Else? You’ll need to be ready to run.
There’ s a lot to do in Dying Light 2: Stay Human, so you won’t want to miss out!
#34 Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a rare find in terms of co-op games, in that it offers both online multiplayer as well as a local co-op mode with split-screen. For Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the game can be played in two-player local split-screen mode. It even supports four-player split-screen on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is in addition to online co-op and crossplay. The level of challenge presented by the game’s enemies increases with the size of your party, to ensure that gameplay is as engaging as it can be as you progress through the Wonderlands. If you’re a fan of looter shooters, Borderlands, or D&D, this is our pick for you.
#33 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
The Lego Star Wars franchise is secretly one of the better co-op franchises out there. With a large roster of characters to choose from, you and your friends can have a unique adventure in a ‘galaxy far, far away’ while not being made to feel as though your co-op gameplay doesn’t matter. Great for kids and adults alike, The Skywalker Saga is light-hearted and provides enough of a challenge to keep players coming back for a while. Following the game’s launch, a number of DLC packs were added, including those based on The Mandalorian and Rogue One.
#32 Back 4 Blood
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead. The original development studio behind the IP, Turtle Rock Studios, decided to offer fans another new thrilling zombie co-op shooter. While the fan base for Left 4 Dead is still very much enjoying the first two installments, Turtle Rock offers essentially the same experience but with modern visuals and mechanics. In the game, players work with a group of other human players or AI as they venture out into different areas gunning down mindless infected monsters. It’s all about gathering weapons and blowing enemies to smithereens. Again, similar to Left 4 Dead, the game offers a variety of different monster types that will show up, each with unique attacks.
#31 Streets of Rage 4
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
The Streets of Rage series was widely popular in the early ’90s for its side-scrolling beat ‘up gameplay, and that hasn’t changed in this installation. Up to four players can duke it out against waves of enemies as they pick up different dropped items and power-ups, the same as the classic arcade game. There is even some fantastic DLC that you can take advantage of, though we won’t go into detail–it will spoil the main game. If you’re a fan of titles like The Simpsons arcade game, then there’s a good chance that you’ll like Streets of Rage 4.
#30 Minecraft Dungeons
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
You’ve heard of Minecraft. A global phenomenon, endless worlds can be created and explored, making for quite a fun and relaxing gameplay experience. The main focus of this game is to explore and thrive in a world filled with friendly critters, NPCs, and monsters. When you start a game, you’ll need to build, harvest, hunt, and maintain your health along with your hunger. Meanwhile, you’ll have the ability to explore and find great spots to start building up a base.
Fans of the IP were eventually given a new game set within the same universe called Minecraft Dungeon, a simple dungeon crawler. Players can work together as they venture through a procedural generated dungeon with random monsters, traps, and puzzles. Your goal is not only to explore the area but find the precious loot that’s hidden inside. While most dungeon crawlers have a class-based system making certain loot worthless to keep, Minecraft Dungeons is more bare-bones in that there are no classes. Whatever equipment you find along the way will be available for everyone to use which makes it a great starter dungeon crawler if you’re not familiar with the genre. This also includes four-player cooperative gameplay both local and online.
#29 Call of Duty: Warzone
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
The battle royale genre has taken the video game industry by storm. One of the most popular in recent memory is Call of Duty: Warzone released in March of 2020. This is your typical battle royale set within the Call of Duty universe. Players have the ability to customize their character and loadouts a bit before dropping into a massive map and trying to demolish the competition.
Like other games in the genre, players will be exploring the map, gathering resources, and fighting off other players. There are a few different game mode options allowing you to play solo or in duos, trios, or quads. The development studio has been updating the game regularly to ensure that bugs are fixed as soon as possible.
#28 Among Us
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
The streaming hit of 2020 is, at its essence, a murder mystery game. Everyone knows Among Us, but here’s a quick synopsis — in Among Us, you and your friends play as a spaceship crew just trying to keep your craft running. One (or more) players are randomly assigned to be traitorous aliens with the goal to kill everyone else. As the crew, you try to survive and figure out which wolf in sheep’s clothing is the traitor. At any time, players can call a timeout to talk over the clues and vote to send suspicious crewmates into the airlock. It’s a tense game with an incredibly simple premise — the fun is all in the social aspect. As a traitor, you can sow chaos not just with kills, but also by throwing accusations at your innocent friends.
#27 Portal 2
PC | Xbox | Nintendo
Anyone who had a PC back in 2011 remembers Portal 2 as being one of the biggest hits of the year. One of the most fun parts of the title playing the entire story along with a friend to solve different teleportation puzzles. There is a single-player campaign where you play the role of the main character, Chell, as you maneuver your way through the Aperature science building, but there’s something way more fun about playing as two robots who seem to have minds of their own. Similar to its predecessor, it is widely believed to be one of the greatest video games ever made. Who wouldn’t love to experience that with a friend?
#26 Left 4 Dead
PC
You’ve probably played one of the two Left 4 Dead titles available on the market today. The franchise was brought out by Valve and brings players together in a cooperative game mode to fight off a variety of undead. A first-person shooter action title, the undead variety adds a nice spin on how to deal with the enemy. All-in-all, the game offers relatively short levels as players are mainly tasked with reaching a certain area to escape the infected city.
With two main installments available, the Left 4 Dead series continues to find active players on the PC due to fan-created levels which are also often available for cooperative gameplay.
#25 Minecraft
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
You’ve heard of Minecraft. A global phenomenon, endless worlds can be created and explored, making for quite a fun and relaxing gameplay experience. The main focus of this game is to explore and thrive in a world filled with friendly critters, NPCs, and monsters. When you start a game, you’ll need to build, harvest, hunt, and maintain your health along with your hunger. Meanwhile, you’ll have the ability to explore and find great spots to start building up a base.
It’s all about progression, getting a system established to keep resources up, improving your base, and obtaining better tools to make the overall experience a bit more seamless. Of course, if you don’t want to go through the game as a survival experience, there is a creative mode option that gives players the ability to freely create without the fear of losing a life, progression, or precious items. This game does offer the ability to allow up to four players in a local co-op. Online, you can work with up to eight players.
#24 Valheim
PC
A staff favorite, Valheim mixed the fun of survival adventure games with the difficulty of being a Viking who needs to abide by the laws of Nordic gods. Players can craft supplies and structures to create villages while also fighting Nordic creatures with their friends to gain new abilities and a stronger character. A single server can host up to four players, and players can drop in and drop out in order to hunt animals and craft items to help each other out in developing the greatest Nordic settlement anyone has ever seen. There’s also a great sense of fulfillment in how easy it is to get lost in this game–the tutorial system is fantastic and the learning curve is low.
#23 Diablo 3
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
The Diablo franchise has been around for decades and while we all wait for the next mainline installment to release, we can still pick up and enjoy Diablo 3. This action RPG still holds up just as well today, giving the definitive loot-filled hack-and-slash gameplay experience. A traditional Diablo game, players pick a class, head into different levels, fight off a slew of demonic enemies, and gather all kinds of loot. You’ll find all sorts of equipment to further buff your character and working with another player will make for some epic questing and fast leveling.
#22 Castle Crashers
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Castle Crashers is a pretty iconic indie title from the development team The Behemoth. The studio has gone on to create other games, but you’ve likely played Castle Crashers before, or are at least familiar. It’s a hack and slash title where players take on the role of a knight that must defend the kingdom from all sorts of enemies.
Visually, the game is a 2D side-scroller where players face a series of boss battles. Up to four players can join in the battle in what will take most players about seven hours to complete. If you haven’t tried this game yet, you’re missing out on a gem.
#21 Divinity: Original Sin 2
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Divinity: Original Sin II takes place after the first installment. During a time of war and religious persecution, Bishop Alexandar the Innocent declares all Sorcerers to be criminals to rid the horrid creatures their powers lure into the game’s lands. Players can make up a team of four as they play through a deep and meaningful narrative, taking on quests around the world and potentially slaying the Bishop.
This is a multiplayer RPG title inviting friends to play together. However, if you’re already a bit into the campaign and don’t want to start over, other players can take control of a character in your party. Likewise, the game offers a plethora of choices to help alter the narrative or means of completing a quest.
#20 Broforce
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Broforce started off as a Game Jam entry that ended up getting continuous developer support. Players are ‘bros’ who fight terrorists with a team of other players just as manly as you. Every level is a destructive wonderland that ends with you having to hoist up an American flag and leave via helicopter while a cinematic explosion goes on in the background. The characters are all parodies of actors and action stars like Chuck Norris and John Rambo which definitely makes the game all the more fun.
#19 Cuphead
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Cuphead is seeing a resurgence in popularity following the recent Netflix television series. You play as the titular Cuphead while a second player can take control of his brother Mugman as you’re taken through several levels and boss fights to repay your debt to the Devil. The game utilizes an incredible hand-drawn aesthetic and features a soundtrack that will absolutely be remembered for years to come. A new DLC titled The Delicious Last Course was released in June, where you can enjoy a new story–and some challenging new battles–with your buddies.
#18 Helldivers
PC | PlayStation
Helldivers is set far in the future. A specialized combat unit known as the Helldivers are sent out to retrieve technology, fight off enemy alien species, and take on any other activity that the government feels is important to mankind’s freedom. While the game does feature a single player campaign, the development team focused on making a more enjoyable multiplayer aspect. Combat is chaotic and does include friendly fire, meaning that players will have to carefully plan out every move to avoid battering their buddies.
#17 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Made as the successor to the ultimately canceled Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Patriots, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege easily makes our list. The tactical shooter has an incredibly active community of online players to this day. Players step into a fight between a group of terrorists and, of course, the highly trained group of individuals that make up the Rainbow team. Essentially, one team of terrorists will seek a hostage while the Rainbow team must carefully breach a building and take down the terrorist group. There’s a bit more to the gameplay than running in and spraying bullets in each room, as stealth plays a big part. Instead of turning a home into an active war zone, there’s a slew of gadgets and weaponry to make kills more effective and accurate.
#16 Rocket League
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Rocket League was a quick indie hit when it launched. There’s not a lot to talk about here–the game throws players into supped-up cars on a futuristic soccer field. Using these cars, you’ll have to race down the area towards a massive soccer ball and attempt to smash it into the opposing player’s goal. It’s a game that will take players a while to get used to control-wise, but once you get the feel, this game is an absolute blast. Vehicles in this game feel like they are able to fly through the field and there’s nitro to further enhance your speed, not to mention a jump feature. Two players can work together as a team or engage in a competitive mode.
#15 Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a great puzzle party game that can be enjoyed with two or more players. In this game, one player has been trapped with a bomb that’s surrounded by a number of puzzles. To defuse the bomb, the player has to explain what they are looking at while the rest of the party focuses on finding solutions. Meanwhile, you’re working against the clock as you attempt to defuse the bomb successfully. To make things even more entertaining, if you have a compatible VR headset, you can make things feel all the more dramatic.
#14 Rayman Legends
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
It’s been a little while since we had a new Rayman title release onto the market. This long-running franchise has quite the fan base and you’ve likely enjoyed some of the earlier titles. If not, Rayman Legends is still a great jumping point if you’d like to play a fantastic platformer.
Overall, the game narrative is simple: a dark force has taken over the lands and captured the princesses. Now, it’s up to Rayman along with his friends in order to rescue them. The gameplay is simplistic and involves defeating enemies along with solving some puzzles that will allow the players to progress further into the campaign. What makes this a great co-op game is that the title will allow players to seamlessly drop into the level at any point.
#13 Destiny 2
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Destiny 2 is a multiplayer experience and is perfect for teaming up with a few friends to grind through for loot. If you enjoy futuristic FPS and have yet to at least try Destiny or its sequel, then you might be missing out.
Launched in 2017 to mixed reception from the community, the abandoned a lot of ideas from its predecessor and failed to encourage its player base to continue playing. However, since going free-to-play (in some respects), Destiny 2 has become a much better game, offering an addictive online looter shooter that is still worth playing in 2022. It may seem intimidating at first, but Destiny 2 is great fun, especially with a full-fire team.
#12 Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is an indie hit and a very simple game to understand, but as the game progresses, it’s extremely difficult to master. In this game, players are in command of a spaceship where they must explore the galaxy. However, it’s not always that easy, as there are different enemies and hazards you’ll have to face on your trip. Being a big ship, there are several stations located around that make it difficult to quickly move to another area. That’s where having co-op available will come in handy, as multiple players can jump around the ship and maintain attributes such as weapons, shields, and engines.
As you progress you’ll have the ability to make upgrades to give your ship a unique load-out. Furthermore, the levels are randomized so you can always find something new to explore each time you start the game. However, much like other titles on this list, you can add more than just two players to this game. The developers at Asteroid Base made this title to support up to four players.
#11 Payday 2
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
If you enjoy a good heist, it doesn’t get much better than Payday 2. While the title may be a bit older at this point, it’s still a solid game that’s enjoyed by veterans and newcomers alike. It also helps that the developers are still bringing out new updates to give players more content to enjoy. Overall, this is a game that’s played best with friends as you participate in four-player heists across different locations. Before you jump into that crime spree to make a quick buck, there’s plenty of planning to go through. After all, you’ll want some insight as to what you’re walking into– everyone needs to be aware of their job and each heist needs to be seamless and free from any law enforcement intervention.
Payday 2 was released back in 2013 and was launched on the PlayStation 4 in 2015. If you’re going to attempt this FPS heist game again or for the first time, it’s worth looking at the Payday 2: Crimewave Edition which makes some overall improvements to the game. We know that there’s a third installment being developed, but at the moment we’re not sure when the game is expected to release.
#10 Killing Floor 2
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Killing Floor 2 tosses players into another wave-based zombie game. Players will continue fighting off Zeds, similar to what we were dealing with in the first Killing Floor. However, the hostiles will continue to get tougher with each new wave. From there, it’s a tough battle to stay alive and keep your enemies at bay.
Along the way, you’ll earn funds to save up and use for different gear to keep you progressing through the tougher rounds. It’s an easy game to pick up and play, but with anything waved-based, there can be a steep challenge towards your eventual end. It’s all about the challenge.
#9 The Division 2
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
The Division 2 takes place in an open-world Washington DC experiencing a civil war between the survivors of the events from the previous game as well as bands of marauders and bandits. Players can enjoy an online experience with friends in different modes that include Dark Zones which provides players with loot and different raids. Similar to the first installment, players will find that The Division 2 is an action RPG with multiplayer-focused gameplay. There’s also additional DLC content to give players a bit more action to enjoy.
#8 A Way Out
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Instead of relying on a multiplayer aspect because it’s more fun, A Way Out does so because single-player is simply not an option. You play as either Leo or Vincent you try to escape from prison with a friend in split-screen mode. Don’t want to buy the game? No problem. You can still play with someone who owns it without having it yourself so long as you are playing with that person. Besides the fun of trying to escape from prison, you can also enjoy fun mini-games like arm wrestling, spearfishing, and more as part of a mode called Grenade Brothers. You’ll definitely want to take advantage of this compelling story with a good buddy.
#7 Sea of Thieves
PC | Xbox
Sea of Thieves relies very heavily on multiplayer, allowing players to form pirate crews and pillage the ships of other online players while also searching for treasure on remote islands. A staggering number of players are always willing to completely roleplay their fantasy pirate life with you if you enjoy genuinely playing and talking like a sailor of the seas. The online community of players is ever-growing and there is even some neat DLC content inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
#6 Ready or Not
PC
If you’re after another tactical shooter experience that’s a bit like the line of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six games, check into Ready or Not. Players are put into the role of a SWAT team working through different highly dangerous operations. You’ll need to work with your group to successfully keep civilians from harm and ensure that the threat is dealt with. This game became an instant hit when it was released as an early release title in December 2021, and players can expect consistent updates as it progresses towards a full release.
#5 Battlefield V
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Following up after the success of Battlefield 1 comes Battlefield V. This video game will take players back into the gritty war of World War II. As a result, players will experience stories showing the brutal war that soldiers were forced to go through. Likewise, there’s a nice array of weaponry that mimics the real guns and melee weapons that soldiers would have had equipped during the time period. There are several modes for players to jump in and battle alongside friends as they push back the enemy forces. This is a way better choice than Battlefield 2042.
#4 Monster Hunter Rise
PC | Nintendo
Monster Hunter games are always a ton of fun to play with friends. Monster Hunter Rise is an incredible title for players to jump into, keeping the formula of other games in the franchise while pumping up the difficulty. Players work together to track down a monster, take them on, and attempt to gather the downed monster’s resources to craft better gear. As the name suggests, there is more focus on vertical movement this time around–players can climb or use a grapple, making things feel even more wide open. While not completely open-world, the areas you’ll be exploring here are vast enough. Also, having a friend may be the difference between life and death. The new Sunbreak expansion continues to smash records, so it’s definitely worth grabbing.
#3 Phasmophobia
PC
Phasmophobia was a breakout hit in 2020. While technically still in early access, the scares are fully-formed in this co-op masterpiece. Players act as investigators in a paranormal investigation team tasked with searching for spirits in different locations and recording what type of spirits they find. The game can also be played in virtual reality, making the already terrifying experience that much more immersive. There have been consistent updates to the game that has added a significant amount of content, implying that the early development stage might be coming to a close soon.
#2 Dead by Daylight
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Dead by Daylight has a massive following and it’s a perfect title to fill that Friday the 13th: The Game void. In this title, you’re dealing with a 1v4 gameplay where four players are survivors attempting to complete a series of goals and escape the area. Meanwhile, one hostile player takes on the role of a monster. The goal for the monster is simple–stop the others from escaping. This means slaughtering the players, but you’ll have to keep moving. Taking too long to commit murder could give another time to escape.
Fortunately, those that are downed can get rescued by another player in the area. As mentioned, this game is still heavily supported today with new crossover events constantly being added into the mix. You can find all sorts of iconic IPs being featured whether it’s from a film franchise such as A Nightmare on Elm Street or a video game IP like Silent Hill.
#1 It Takes Two
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
It Takes Two stole the show in 2021, named Game of the Year and becoming one of the best co-op games on the market. The title is designed specifically for co-op split screen, meaning that you have to play with another player either in person or online. There are tons of unique game mechanics and puzzles to solve throughout, along with plenty of minigames. The underlying story might hit home for a lot of people and there are plenty of themes that can definitely bring tears to your eyes, but at the end of the day, this is just a fun title, plain and simple.
