Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

Up first in our ranking of the best superhero games is Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. In the game, there are twenty-four characters to choose from, all familiar to fans of the Marvel Universe. The most important choice of all is which side you’ll be on in the Marvel Civil War, the storyline on which the game is based. The fusion powers are another cool feature, as you combine iconic Marvel abilities with other players to make all-new superpowers. In total, there are 250 weapons fusions to create.

Co-op multiplayer is available both online and off, and action in this RPG game happens from a dungeon-crawl perspective. Some call the Ultimate Alliance 2 the best Marvel game ever, regardless of which platform you choose. The camera control is another well-reviewed aspect of gameplay. Mechanics are interesting for serious gamers and casual gaming fans alike. Some do call the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance a bit better, though.

inFamous Second Son

The next pick in our list is one of the best superhero games for the PS4, inFamous Second Son. This is the third installment in the inFamous series. In the game, you’ll follow Delsin Rowe, a Seattle resident who has recently discovered his own superpowers. Played from a third-person perspective in an open-world environment, gameplay picks up seven years after the last inFamous game concluded. In this universe, superhumans like Rowe are hunted down by the Department of Unified Protection (DUP). 

As a so-called “conduit,” Rowe must learn to use a slew of new powers, manipulating the physical world with his mind. While doing so, he must avoid the DUP authorities. The compelling plot only develops from there. Fans of inFamous Second Son call the game underrated with some of the most fluid action they’ve ever seen. Each superpower is unique and the “karma system” is another well-reviewed aspect. The game is a bit short, though, some say.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

The next game we reviewed, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is LEGO meets the MCU — sign us up! In this superhero game, you’ll play your favorite Marvel superhero reimagined in LEGO form. Loki and other Marvel villains like Doctor Doom are building a weapon capable of world destruction, and it’s your job to stop them. You’ll play as characters from both the MCU and the X-Men universe, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Wolverine, among others.

One popular aspect of gameplay is the character creator system in which you can build a hero of your own design from available elements. Otherwise, what makes the game worth it is the broad selection of superpowers. There are also side quests and areas of the “overworld” to explore. The star-studded voice acting is also strong, we found out. If confused at first, feedback says stick with it — you’ll get the hang of it.

The Punisher

The Punisher is the next game we reviewed. In this graphically violent game, the Punisher, aka Thomas Jane, battles the Yakuza. There are cameos in the game from your favorite Marvel characters, like Iron Man and Kingpin, in a storyline that’s equal parts superhero tale and gritty crime drama. Overall reminiscent of Max Payne, the game is full of “delicious mayhem,” according to one report. 

The graphics are awesome and the characters look real. It is an older game, so beware — some of the mechanics and controls may seem a bit clunky by modern standards. Called a good third-person shooter, the environments are highly interactive. Special kills, Interrogation mode, and weapons selection are also both popular aspects. It’s also easy to learn for beginners. Don’t miss the torture feature. The Punisher, it’s important to note, is considered one of the most violent video games and for adults only.

X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse

In X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, up to four players can jump into the X-Men universe. Set sometime after X-Men Legends, the X-Men must work together with the Brotherhood of Mutants to rescue Professor X. The plot develops from there, and you’ll earn experience and upgrade your abilities. Combine attacks in Super Combo to inflict even more damage, or switch to skirmish mode where players go one-on-one or fight the AI, instead. 

In total, there are sixteen players to choose from and ten super powers for both melee and ranged attacks. Overall, this is a solid and underrated game that presents a challenge, based on feedback. A few boss battles are simply too hard, according to one report. But otherwise, the characters are balanced and handle well. Like an RPG, you’ll need to strategize how and which stats you want to increase and what kinds of equipment to gather. The character skins are also fun to play with.

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

In this third-person action-adventure, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Bruce Banner seeks to cure himself from gamma ray poisoning under the power of hypnosis. Meanwhile, Emil Blonsky has transformed into the Abomination, a giant reptilian, who can only be stopped by the Hulk. As the plot develops, there are thirty missions to accomplish in the free-roaming, open world environment. There’s also a good number of side challenges to keep things interesting. Don’t miss the more than 100 attacks, including several classic Hulk moves, with which to fight. 

This is an older game and feedback says it shows in the graphics. But otherwise, the game holds up well, according to reports. As the Hulk, you’ll jump buildings and smash your fist into walls. And the overall feel and layout is very similar to an actual comic book, according to reports. Though some call it the best Hulk game ever, and among the best Marvel games ever made, it could use a remaster.

The Wonderful 101

In a storyline unrelated to Marvel or DC Comics, The Wonderful 101 is the next option of the superhero games we reviewed. You’ll play a member of a team of heroes known as the 100 Wonderful Ones. Some fight with an oversized fist, among other powers. From an overhead perspective, you’ll take on a group of enemies known as the GEATHJERK Federation, intent on world domination. One cool feature are the Unite Morphs, as all the heroes unite into one fighting force. As a Unite Morph, you’ll also perform tasks like bridge building.  

The game has a good mix of action and problem solving, and fans call the storyline relatively simple with good twists to keep things interesting. We especially liked the character Wonder Blue’s Unite Sword, capable of longer slashes and striking more than one enemy at once. In total, there are eight “Wonder Morphs” like the Unite Sword to discover. Controls were designed for the Wii-Pad, we found out, which created some issues on other platforms.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

Up next is Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, an update on the old arcade game Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. This game boasts tag-team based fighting mechanics and the freedom to switch between characters on your team midfight. There isn’t much storyline, it’s important to point out, but there are three modes of combat: arcade mode, against the AI; versus mode, in which you go one-on-one against a friend; and mission mode, as your character fights through trial stages. Training mode helps you get started.

The game otherwise pits your favorite Marvel characters against Capcom characters from games like Street Fighter and others. This is among the best fighting games ever, we found out. Players especially like the freedom to fight Marvel classic heroes like Spider-Man against Arthur from Capcom’s Ghosts and Goblins. You may have to grind to achieve greatness, though.

Chroma Squad

Another inventive twist on the superhero games formula is Chroma Squad. In the tactical RPG, a group of actors have quit their jobs to start their own Power Rangers-type TV show. In doing so, they craft their own weapons, outfits, upgrade gear, and make Mechas. At the center of it all lies a mysterious artifact called “Cerebro.” Once tactical RPG combat begins, abilities can be combined in teamwork maneuvers, and each stage of the game becomes something like an episode of a TV show tribute to Power Rangers. 

The pixel art and Chiptune soundtrack are also both popular aspects. Otherwise, this is a must-play for RPG fans. Plot and gameplay are both fantastic, based on feedback. What one player liked in particular was the spirit and soul that game designers put into the project, filled with fourth-wall breaking meta commentary, and lots of humor. Stick around for all three different endings.

Marvel’s Avengers

When it comes to superheroes, few compare to the Earth’s mightiest heroes, otherwise known as the Avengers. The next game in our ranking, Marvel’s Avengers, takes place on opening day of Avengers HQ, San Francisco. The third-person storyline develops as an unknown enemy ruins the occasion, causing havoc for which the core group of Avengers are blamed. As a result, they disband. That is until Kamala Khan, otherwise known as Ms. Marvel, gets them back together. 

From there, action takes place in both co-op and single-player gameplay, as new powers are mastered, the Earth is defended, and your very own roster of heroes develops. With RPG mechanics, Marvel’s Avengers could be the best Marvel game out there, based on reports. It looks great, and the game only improves as new content is added. It may only appeal to true Marvel stans, we learned, and it’s also important to make sure your hardware can handle it.

DC Universe Online

Hey DC fans, this one’s for you — our fifth pick for the best superhero games to play is DC Universe Online. The basic story is cohesive, both in the main plot and on side-missions, raids, and special alerts, as a cybernetic bad guy seeks to consume all the Earth’s resources. This free-to-play MMO pits new DC heroes against classics like Batman and Superman — play on the side of a hero or villain, your choice. The game blends aspects of action-adventure and RPG, while the story takes place in well-known DC locations like Gotham City and Metropolis. 

If you played the game in the past, you may want to try it again, we found out. New content has been recently added. The comic book voice acting and dialogue is described as cheesy but fun. According to reports, devs have now opened almost all content to all players, no membership required.  Build your own hero, and everything is customizable.

Injustice 2

Next, we have another DC-themed superhero game, Injustice 2. The sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us, Injustice 2 picks up where the first one left off — with Batman and Superman in battle. Superman’s regime is no more, and in its place, Batman picks up the pieces. Standing in his way is a new conglomeration of DC villains known as the Society. From there, gameplay develops in one-on-one combat, with DC heroes and villains as well as characters from third-party franchises in downloadable content, including Hellboy and TMNT. 

Those characters aside, there are twenty-eight heroes and villains to choose from, and a new gear system for outfits and weapons. In either campaign, arcade, or online mode, the storyline is amazing, even for those unfamiliar with the DC universe. The game is a bit heavy on button-mashing, according to one report. There are also two different endings, depending on the choices you’ve made along the way.

Saints Row IV: Re-Elected

Third place in our ranking of the superhero games is Saints Row IV. As leader of the Saints, you’ve been elected President of the United States. And in turn, you have superpowers. Otherwise, there’s an alien invasion afoot led by Saints villain, Zinyak. In this open world, third-person shooter, you and the other Saints must stop the invasion. Primary gameplay takes place in missions to liberate certain areas with side missions and occasional demolition-derby style matchups — don’t miss two-player co-op mode.

Previous Saints Row games were gangster-based, but this version transitions well into superhero territory. The character design and update system are both strong, the soundtrack is awesome, and the weapons are cool, we found out. The customizable clothing is another popular features. Some say the Saints are just too powerful, though, which sometimes makes things a bit boring.

Batman Arkham Knight

In the penultimate spot, we’ve chosen Batman Arkham Knight as the second best superhero game we reviewed. At the conclusion of the Arkham Trilogy, Scarecrow has returned. It’s Batman’s job to stop the coalition of criminals set to take over Gotham City with Scarecrow in the center. You’ll also fight Harley Quinn, Two-Face, and the Riddler, and other iconic bad guys from Batman stories. Through the main story and the side missions, you’ll explore Gotham, face-off against a whole new villain — the Arkham Knight — and fight with new gadgets. 

Setting Batman Arkham Knight apart is the introduction of Rocksteady Game’s version of the Batmobile. Batman’s utility belt is also upgraded with new devices for crime fighting and investigation. One fan called Arkham Knight the best game in the series, with an angrier, faster, and better equipped Caped Crusader. Gameplay is smooth and open, based on feedback.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

And finally, we reveal Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales as the best amongst all the superhero games to play. In the game, Miles Morales has come to terms with his new life’s calling as Spider-Man. Miles finds himself in the middle of a conflict between an army of modern gangsters and corporate interests against the backdrop of Marvel’s New York. Follow Miles as he perfects his new Spidey skillset.

Some powers unique to Miles are bio-electric venom and new types of camouflage.  The game also offers new controls and customization. Fans call Miles Morales a great game and a worthy successor of previous Spider-Man installments. The soundtrack also stood out for many players, as did the new air trick variations. When we heard about a Spider-Cat travel companion, we were all in. The web-swinging, combat, and cutscenes are also all great.
