Game Zone, a similar store-within-a-store initiative, was launched by Movie Gallery. These stores were designed and built for use in Movie Gallery locations, whereas CrazyGame was typically found in Hollywood Video stores. While many locations ran these areas as completely separate brands (both Game Zone and GameCrazy had separate staff and management), others ran them as a single unified team. While the majority of GameCrazy locations were within the rental partner, the company did expand its chain to include standalone GameCrazy locations.

According to Americans magazine as of  December 31, 2006, there were 634 GameCrazy locations, most of which were in the same building as Hollywood Video. At the time of the chain’s closure, standalone “concept stores” were being built, with the most recent one opening in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2006, GameCrazy contributed 13% of Movie Gallery’s revenue, with 70% coming from new and used software and 30% from new and used hardware products. GameCrazy competed with specialty retail video game stores like GameStop and the rapidly growing video game franchise Play N Trade, as well as big box retailers like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy.

Store Information

GameCrazy, as a video game specialty store, primarily sold new and used video game consoles, accessories, and games. Downfall

Despite significant efforts to respond to business challenges, the company began to experience financial difficulties. Movie Gallery filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection under the United States Bankruptcy Code in October 2007. Because of these issues, the stock price fell below $1 per share and the company was delisted from the NASDAQ in November 2007.

On September 28, 2009, Movie Gallery, which owned GameCrazy, announced that it would close 200 of its 680 stores by the end of October 2009 due to financial problems caused by failing video stores.

The stock price of Movie Gallery fell from $1.25 at the end of October 2009 to $.05 at the end of December 2009, and many locations fell behind on rent. As a result, the company retained the services of restructuring firm Moelis & Company, who granted it a 60-day grace period to negotiate with lenders and landlords. However, it was forced to declare bankruptcy for the second time in February 2010.

On April 30, 2010, it was announced during a company-wide conference call that all U.S. Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, and GameCrazy stores would file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in May 2010 and close their doors. Analysts believe that the unprofitability of Movie Gallery & Hollywood Video, caused by competition from Blockbuster Inc. and online retailers such as Netflix and Redbox, was a major factor in the company’s decision to close the retail chain.

The GameCrazy.com website was relaunched as a gaming blog on December 15, 2011, but has not been updated since late October 2014.
