Apple has released the first public beta of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 for users to download. The public beta can be installed on any iOS 13 compatible iPhone and iPadOS 13 compatible iPad.

Anyone can enroll in the public beta testing program for iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, though beta software is much less stable than final versions and thus it’s really only appropriate for advanced users, and preferably on devices that are not for primary use.

iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 both include many new interesting features, including an all new Dark Mode theme, performance enhancements, a new QuickPath swiping keyboard, improvements to many stock apps like Mail and Photos, the ability to connect to SMB shares in Files app, the ability to access external storage volumes in Files app, new Animoji icons, and much more. Note that iPadOS is simply iOS rebranded for iPad.

How to Download iOS 13 Public Beta & iPadOS 13 Public Beta

Important: beta system software is buggy and prone to experience problems and bugs, and perhaps even data loss. Therefore, the public beta should only be installed by advanced users with a thorough understanding of device management, or at least onto a secondary device that is not necessary in day-to-day functioning.

Always backup your iPhone or iPad before installing any beta software.

  • Go to https://beta.apple.com/ to enroll from an iPhone or iPad

After you enroll an eligible iPad or iPhone, you then download the public beta profile which allows access to download and install the iOS 13 public beta (or ipadOS 13 public beta) through the Settings app Software Update section.

It is very important to create a backup of your device in iTunes on a computer before updating to the iOS 13 / iPadOS 13 public beta so that you can downgrade iOS 13 beta back to iOS 12 if needed. You can also create a backup with iCloud if desired, but iCloud backups can only be used to restore from after the downgrade has complete, and iCloud backups will be overwritten by iOS 13 / iPadOS 13 if it’s installed on a device.

Failure to create sufficient backups can result in permanent data loss from an iPhone or iPad. That applies to all system software updates, but is doubly important for beta system software releases which are much more prone to experiencing problems than stable final builds.

Separately, users can also download MacOS Catalina public beta on a compatible Mac, along with a public beta of tvOS 13 for Apple TV.

Apple has said that iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 will be released in the fall to the general public.
